Today begins the final conference of the EpiSouth Network
After seven years of activity, the EpiSouth Network presented the results it gathered in a final conference, organized by the Italian Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), that will start today in Rome. Several topics will be discussed during the conference: the project impact, its added value at a national and regional level, its sustainability and its possible future developments. The EpiSouth Network is an EU-funded project that – by building a network that includes the countries of South-East Europe, North Africa and Middle-East – is aimed to establish international collaboration on epidemiological issues in the Mediterranean region.
At the core of the project lies the idea that surveillance, early detection of cases and an effective risk communication are the best available instruments for public health personnel. For such tasks, building a strong cooperative network is a key element, especially in an area like the Mediterranean one, whose countries form a recognized migration system and share common public health problems. The EpiSouth Network, officially launched on October 1st 2006 and terminated on June 30th 2010, is constituted by 27 countries – 10 of which from the European Union – and represents the biggest cooperative effort between Mediterranean countries.
